Today Jesus feeds more than 5000 people to demonstrate God’s abundance. Each verse of this hymn uses other biblical sources that also use feeding to describe our encounter with Christ in worship. The final phrase, “Taste and see that God is good,” quotes Psalm 34:8. This text was written by Sylvia Dunstan, one of the first women ordained in the United Church of Canada. She served in a prison ministry as well as on the denomination’s worship committee; through conferences and publications her many hymns gained a large audience before her early death from cancer in 1993.
